From Governor Erna Stevenson
Dear Friends,
"Tis the season to mark our 2007 calendars with Rotary events to look forward to . . .
But first, I must note that we started this holiday season with the loss of two Rotarians in our district, Jim Tuck of Russian River, and Harvey Freetley of Petaluma.
Jim was a constant and cheerful presence at district events, and at conferences he was often a one-man "Hospitality" suite along with his wife, Connie Tuck of Petaluma Valley Rotary. A mainstay and two-time president of his own club, Jim was always quick with a supportive and caring word for Rotary efforts in other clubs as well.
Harvey, of course, brought The Dictionary Project to life in our part of the world. Several years ago, he learned about a wonderful idea sweeping the country. The goal was to improve literacy by giving personal dictionaries to third-graders. Ever resourceful, Harvey figured out the logistics, made the connections, enrolled Rotary Clubs in the idea, and, along with his wife Marlene, put his considerable heart behind it. Last year he was recognized as "District Rotarian of the Year" by Governor Charlie Kelly.
Both Jim and Harvey shine as Rotarians who, through their quiet service, kind presence and gallant support of others, were able to give immeasurably to others. We were very, very fortunate to have had them, and blessed indeed to know that their inspiration lives on.
I hope that you have a few minutes over these holidays to review 2006 and look ahead to 2007. The District Assembly is April 15 in Ukiah, the District Conference is May 15-18 in Rohnert Park, and the Rotary International Convention is very close this year . . . Salt Lake City. Seldom do we get a convention so close to home, and so accessible by plane, train, or auto.
Jim and Harvey vividly demonstrated how two memorable lives were made even more meaningful . . . in great part, I believe, because of calendars dotted with Rotary events!
George and I send our most heartfelt Holiday wishes. We thank you for all you do, and look forward to seeing you very soon.
