From Rotary District 5130 Governor Erna Stevenson -
"We know that unless we defeat poverty, we will never achieve peace and stability."
-- DG Erna
Dear Rotarians,
February is WORLD UNDERSTANDING MONTH
World Understanding reminds of that as we continue what we Rotarians do best, Service Above Self, we make a difference in so many areas that we will never see. But we continue our efforts as we know that unless we defeat poverty, we will never achieve peace and stability.
So I want to thank all of the clubs in District for all the projects that you do to help your community and the world, for working with the youth, the elderly, the at risk youths. I am very proud of all the good work our District 5130 Rotarians have accomplished. My heart is with you!
CONGRATULATION$:
Four Clubs Receive Rotary Grants for Public Relations
The following clubs have received Public Relations Grants from Rotary International:
Southwest Eureka: $1,500
Eureka: $1,500
Old Town Eureka: $1,500
Petaluma Valley: $2,000
This program funds club efforts to place RI's global public image campaign materials in local media and in public areas. The campaign, also known as Humanity in Motion, offers professionally produced artwork and text for billboards, banners, and newspaper supplements, as well as radio and television public service announcements.
To learn more about applying next year, go to Rotary.org, see "Club-District Support" then to "Club Resources" and "Effective Public Relations". While there, I recommend you subscribe to "PR Tips" a free and very helpful e-newsletter from Rotary International's Public Relations Department.
CONGRATULATIONS to DGE Ken Moulton and Pam for finishing their DGE training at the Rotary International Assembly in San Diego. While it is an intense week of training, it is the experience of a lifetime sitting side by side with fellow DGE's from 169 countries and preparing to lead the District in 2007-2008. Pam's father, retired Rotarian Bill Meehan of Oakmont in Santa Rosa, has been ill lately, so the Moultons have been juggling their many responsibilities to manage everything. We wish them the best.
IMPORTANT DATES:
April 14th - District Assembly: "MISSION: POSSIBLE!". It is not too early to get a commitment from your board and new Rotarians to attend. It is such a wonderful opportunity to learn about the essentials of Rotary.
May 18-20th - District Conference, Doubletree, Rohnert Park. Mark your calendars and plan to attend the entire conference. You won't be disappointed.
COOL KIDS CAMP - a District-Wide Project
Imagine a child living in a home in which unpredictable violence and abuse is part of her memory or his daily life. Seven years ago, Cool Kids Camp was initiated as our first District-Wide service project. It takes at-risk children out of their usual environments to give them a break from the stress and an opportunity to be "just kids" in healthy surroundings with positive role models.
The Camp is in the southern part of our District, headed by PDG John Strong, Petaluma Valley, 762-5530; johnnystrong@comcast.net.
It is possible only through the sponsorship by Rotary Clubs of individual campers recommended by human service agencies. The cost is low. Please get in touch with John to arrange your club's participation.
INVITATION TO ATTEND CHARTER NIGHT
District Rotarians are invited to attend the chartering night of the Rotary Club of Plymouth-Foothills, Saturday, March 17, 2007, at the Jackson Rancheria Casino. Guest Speaker will be PDG David Denney. For more information and reservations call PJ at (209) 296-7723, or let me know and I will fax you the registration form.
CONTINUE OUR CONTRIBUTION TO POLIO ERADICATION
Our greatest limitation to defeating this disease now is funding. We are at a critical cross road in the process of eradicating this disease. Currently, the live polio virus is only endemic in specific regions of four countries - India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria. However, these four countries are fueling more than 1,000 new cases of polio annually. Make a contribution today.
MEMORIES OF HAROLD BOSTOCK
by Jack Vallerga, PDG
The late Harold Bostock (Santa Rosa Rotary) was Governor of District 104 (later to become District 513 in 1957.) While attending the Rotary Presidential Dinner for R.I. President Royce Abbey, from Australia, 1988-1989, in Burlingame, California in January 1989 (District 513), Harold's thoughts went back 40 years and what District 104 was like when he was the District Governor in 1948-49) The District then was territorially much larger, stretching from Arcata to Hollister with 2,885 members in 43 clubs. The Governor had no Assistant Governors, only club presidents and secretaries on his team. There were fewer overall activities then and The Rotary Foundation was in its infancy, there was nothing like Polio Plus, no Rotaract, and no RYLA and no Interact.
Two new clubs were chartered this year: The Rotary Club of San Carlos was chartered on January 5, 1949 and The Rotary Club of Los Altos was chartered on March 5, 1949.
During this year (1948-1949) R.I. President Angus Mitchell of Australia addressed the Rotary Club of San Francisco, then came to Santa Rosa to speak at a joint meeting of the seven clubs in Sonoma County. Later that year (1949) Phillip Lovejoy, General Secretary of R.I. was the special representative of R.I. President Angus Mitchell at the District 104 Conference, which was held at Hoberg's in Lake County. Harold felt honored that two great Rotarians came to our District that year (1948-1949.)
The following is a quote from an article Harold wrote in 1989: "Rotary has been one of the treasured experiences of my life. It can be for you too, if you will adapt to Royce Abbey's formula, 'Put Life Into Rotary - Your Life'. I would like to add here R.I. President Hugh Archer's, from Dearborn, Michigan, formula, 'Enjoy Rotary, The Dividends Can Be Immeasurable'.")
Harold was a young new member!
Erna's Note: When Harold joined Rotary in 1937, the year he turned 30, lunch was only fifty cents! To see his last Rotary interview, conducted in 2001 (when he was 94) by Chris Parr-Feldman, go to: http://www.rotary5130.org/wheel_news/franz_nov_2001.pdf or find it by Googling "Harold Bostock Santa Rosa Rotary". 2007 marks the 100th anniversary of Harold's birth.
Yours in Service
