In 2003-2004, RI President Jonathan Majiyagbe promoted the concept of "The Family of Rotary". Since Rotary's beginning, in 1905, we have grown to a world-wide organization, and every thing we do, every person we touch, is adding to our Rotary Family.
This month, especially, let's look at ways to connect - and re-connect - with our "extended family".
We have just passed Thanksgiving - and, traditionally, that day has the most long-distance phone calls, as we connect to parents and grand-parents, children and grand-children, and all the aunts and uncles and other relatives that no longer share our table. How often do we invite our relatives to our Club meetings (or other functions, even service projects)? Do we suggest Rotary membership to relatives (near OR far)?
During this month, let's keep those in mind - and more. How about families of deceased Rotarians? Do you stay in touch? Are the family members invited to Club functions? Do we remember their birthdays? Are former club members (still in the area) contacted from time to time?
Think of all the rest of the people that have joined our Rotary Family - YOUR Rotary Family - over the years:
Exchange Students and their families
GSE team members/Ambassadorial Scholars
Partners in World Community Service projects
Scholarship winners and beneficiaries of local service projects
Acquaintances from Rotary Conventions (look for that stack of business cards)
Surprise someone this month. Send a card, letter, e-mail to any of the above list. Call an old friend. Enhance a new friendship. Extend and strengthen our Rotary Family this month and throughout the year.
