Hello everybody and greetings from Guatemala!
Photos
As many of you may have seen or read in the news, Guatemala was hit yet again by natural disasters.
On Thursday of last week, the Pacaya volcano (approx. 25 kms south of Guatemala-City) erupted violently and spew rocks and sand into the air. The sand later “rained down” and all of Guatemala-City and surrounding areas were covered with 1-2 cm of black sand. The airport was closed for nearly a week. The sand is still being cleared away, but in the meantime it is blocking drainages and leading to inundations (we are, after all, at the beginning of the rainy season).
Two days later, tropical storm Agatha hit Guatemala from the Pacific and we had major flooding in many parts of the country, including – but not limited to - the areas around Antigua and Lake Atitlan . Many roads and bridges were destroyed, entire villages wiped out (more than 125 people have been killed and many are still missing) and many people are homeless.
Apart from shelter, they also need food, water, medicine etc.
Between our employees and ourselves we are doing what we can to help wherever possible, but much more is needed. Therefore, we are appealing to our international friends to lend us a hand. Obviously, cash donations would be the fastest way to get the help to the people.
Please let me know if you are willing to help, and if the answer is yes, please specify the amount of your help.
I would suggest, in order to speed things up, that you let me know for the time being how much you are willing to donate, and I advance the corresponding amount immediately so we can purchase the needed products right away locally, and you transfer the amount to an account of ours later.
All of this help will be channeled through the local Rotary clubs who have already set up everything to get the help to the needy as fast as possible.
Thanks in advance for your help, and I look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards
